I do think a lot of people think that by going along to networking, like joining the gym, means "job done" and then complain when its not quite so simple. But then again its not actually that hard either, so much of it is about listening, and contributing to the conversation. Once you know how to listen you will hear the pain people are in and know someone you can help (or indeed be able to help yourself).

Hi Phil,
I read your article with interest.
I have attended networking events before (not BNI) but mostly the people present have been strangers to me. Each time I have had to pluck up the courage to thrust myself forward - hoping I wasn't imposing myself on them - and try to explain what my company does within a few minutes. As these people don't know either me or enough about my company, why should they feel inclined to recommend my business to anyone?
I was a guest at Elmbridge BNI at Burhill Golf Club yesterday. It really opened my eyes to how networking should be done. The members knew, trusted, and, quite frankly, seemed good friends. Who wouldn't recommend a trusted friend's business?
I agree with you, regular networking seems to work.
Regards,
Christine Trigg
