I have written this blog to spark some thoughts around the challenges many businesses are facing now around innovation. Everywhere I go the word I now hear is ‘Innovate’. Mentoring – are you up for it?

  I just came off the phone following a random conversation from a person I don’t know.  It was created due to noticing a desperate status update that I read on FaceBook where she was stating how hard life was as a single mum with 4 young children and how much she wanted to start her own business.   For some reason we were connected to FaceBook, we were already ‘friends’, her status came past me as I checked the news feeds from my network. Social Media meets BNI and solves a real life plumbing problem

As you know, Social Media and networking online has been 14 years of Thomas (husband) and my life. Since 1998 we have evangelized the message of the joy and success of the online world. Skeptics have said ‘ridiculous, I like to meet people face to face before I buy’, and many have actually used this sentence to challenge me “you mean to say even a Plumber should be doing social media”?

What can we teach youths about Networking Offline (and online)?

Over the last 14 years of owning my own business I would say I have been through a process of being an Accidental Entrepreneur and an Apprentice Networker. The Accidental Entrepreneur was literally as it sounds. I wasn’t seeking to be a business person nor an ‘entrepreneur’, I purely created a network of people like me and due to being so early in the market for this I grew, with Thomas Power, a global community, Ecademy. That forced me kicking and screaming into the responsibilities of risk, cash flow, innovation and fear, plus friendships, ideas, creativity and joy!

There are no statues to the critics!

I am a huge advocate of the power of Blogging. The ability for us to be able to get our thoughts out into the world and self publish is astonishing to me. I have been doing it since 2002 and I have to be careful sometimes when I come across closed minds that don’t want to Blog. Don’t want to, don’t know how to or don’t think anyone would be interested in you? These are three very different challenges. I will treat the two separately.

Alone but not lonely

As I sit at home on my laptop, the hum of the computer server in the background and the occasional movement from one of my dogs I don’t feel lonely but I am alone. Loneliness is something I have feared all my life, it has limited me and it has driven me. But here and now, alone in my house I still feel connected.
