What next?

You have been out networking and have had a good time, met some interesting people, and collected a pocketful of business cards.  Some of the people you hope to meet again.  But, to be honest, that is about it.

If that is how most of your networking ends you need to think about ‘What next?’

What do you want from every conversation you have?  What do you want the outcome to be?

Now you might be thinking that it’s always the same and it’s pretty obvious.  But is it?  Networking is the same as all marketing; the more targeted you are the better the results will be.  If your networking is based on ‘anything will do’ then, in most cases, the results will be more than disappointing.

Now we often talk about having a plan when networking.  It’s not about sales – rather it’s about making contact with potential partners and future clients.  But, to be really successful, for your networking to have a real benefit, you must know your ‘What next?’  Your conversations need to end on a positive note.  Have a call to action.  What are you going to do?

It might be that coffee at a later date, or that you are going to send the person something, add them to your blog list, an agreement to follow-up in the future, or just permission to keep in touch.  Even an agreement not to keep in touch!  But the key to successful networking is to have a ‘What next?’

If you have your ‘outcome’ planned before you go networking, never again will you leave an event with an, “It was nice to meet you.  Maybe see you again”!  Instead you will have been to an event that will have given you real value and long term benefit.

Please let me know how you get on at your next networking event.
